OK, that last part DID NOT sound so romantic but I look at it from a female empowerment standpoint. Women didn't have to cower in the dark because they were single - they celebrated the fact that they were single and ready for LOOOOOOOVE.
In modern times, single folk still wear white (usually) on this day in order to be "spotted" for marriage. Yom Ahavah is kinda like the Jewish version of Valentines Day. Chocolate and flowers are appropriate gifts.
This Tu B'Av, instead of planning the rest of my wedding, I am fighting with the Rabbanut...still. No no, we're not looking to get married by them anymore... my Masorti wedding is perfect for us. I am fighting so that Jews, like me, don't need to have our Jewishness "verified".
